Vase With Five Sunflowers (Painting)

Wiseland-1, Dr. Rubaiul Murshed

This is the first of several works by van Gogh lost to accident and war. The artist did several paintings of sunflowers in multiple still life series, but this particular image was destroyed in August 1945 by U.S. air raids over Japan’s Ashiya District. The painting at the time was in the collection of Koyata Yamamoto. Van Gogh was fond of flowers. Sunflowers represented happiness for van Gogh. It was also the picture that van Gogh was most proud of.
